Rocking

Overview

Rocking Motion

Movement of a piece in a way that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

This is the most common type of motion the Ornamental Turner starts with. To achieve this motion, one of two things has to happen:

  • The object is moved (the more traditional approach), or
  • The cutting head is moved (the Paul Cler approach).

This YouTube video shows rocking. Harvey's lathe is not an ornamental lathe per se, but shows the piece moving back and forth along the X axis.
